Cameron Outfitters hunts mountain lion, bobcat, and wolf in the River of No Return and the Selway wilderness areas. Hunting pressure in Unit 17 is low enough that it is a two-lion area, and they say 7 of the top 10 Boone and Crockett cats have come out of it. They also claim more road access inside the wilderness than any other outfitter in the state, which is what makes a winter hunt here work at all. They specialise in trophy toms.
The day starts by running their nearly forty miles of snowmobile and mule trail looking for fresh tracks. When one cuts, the chase is on. Later in the day the guides set up and call wolves. It is a two-wolf and unlimited-bobcat unit, with reduced non-resident tags at $41.75 for lion and $31.75 for wolf; bobcat tags come with the hunting licence.
Hunts run from their deluxe main base camp at the headwaters of the Selway River. You stay in heated wall tents and eat hearty meals served family style. Winter here is spectacular, and the wildlife on its winter range makes it a real photographic trip as much as a hunt.
Species and guiding - Combination lion, wolf and bobcat, 1-on-1: December to March, from $9,800 per hunter - Combination lion, wolf and bobcat, 2-on-1: December to March, from $6,800 per hunter - Wolf only, 1-on-1: December to March, from $4,900 per hunter
