Gary and Sherri Cameron run a family outfit out of Darby, Montana, hunting Idaho's Unit 17 on the far side of the Bitterroot divide. They hold exclusive guiding rights to more than 800 square miles of the Selway-Bitterroot and Frank Church wilderness areas, with 25 authorised camps spread from Burnt Mountain in the north to Parker Mountain in the south.

Unit 17 is one of the few places left where you can rifle hunt bugling elk in the early season, and the outfitter tags are guaranteed, so there is no draw to enter. The country is remote and steep, the camps are wall tents with wood stoves, and you get to them on horses and mules.

It's a four-season operation. Bear and predators in spring, wilderness schools and pack trips through the summer, elk and deer in the fall, lion and wolf on the winter snow.
