Cameron Outfitters say their guided hunters see over twice the success rate of their non-guided friends, year after year, and this six-day school exists to close that gap for people who hunt on their own. Hunting elk in remote mountainous terrain is nothing like hunting whitetails, and reading hunting magazines is no substitute for being in the hills. The skills work anywhere elk are found.
The course covers reading elk country off a topographic map to predict bedding areas, feeding areas, and travel routes; scouting without disturbing animals or pushing them out of the country; hunting optics and glassing; reading sign, bull or cow, how old that rub is; bugling and cow calling, what call to use and when to be quiet; stalking; field dressing and working an animal up for a mule or your own back; skinning, caping, and trophy care for European, full, or shoulder mounts; scoring a trophy, and judging one before you shoot; what the professionals carry in a day pack and what they leave behind; and orienteering for when the GPS dies five miles from the nearest trail.
Classes run during the day, with evenings free to fish, hike, or sit by the fire. You stay at their deluxe Kit Carson base camp, and food, lodging, and all equipment are provided.
Class size is capped at 10 students, and group discounts are available for four or more.

Gary and Sherri Cameron run a family outfit out of Darby, Montana, hunting Idaho's Unit 17 on the far side of the Bitterroot divide. They hold exclusive guiding rights to more than 800 square miles of the Selway-Bitterroot and Frank Church wilderness areas, with 25 authorised camps spread from Burnt Mountain in the north to Parker Mountain in the south.
