Unlike the wolf opportunities that can come during fall elk season, this trip is built specifically around pursuing wolves through Montana’s winter landscape.
Trucks and snowmobiles allow guides to cover country and search for fresh tracks and signs of wolf activity. From there, the hunt becomes a game of trying to determine where the animals are headed and how to get into position before they disappear into another drainage.
Wolf hunting rewards persistence.
These animals can cover enormous distances in a short period of time, and hours of seemingly empty country can change instantly when a fresh set of tracks appears or wolves are spotted moving across a distant slope.
Conditions can be serious. Steel Creek advises hunters to prepare for temperatures ranging from relatively mild winter weather down to approximately 20 degrees below zero.
