Hound Hunting · Mountain Lion
Darby, Montana
Steel Creek Outfitters’ winter mountain lion hunt is one of the most physically demanding hunts they offer. Guides use 4x4 trucks and snowmobiles to search snowy mountain country for fresh lion tracks before releasing a seasoned pack of hounds. From there, hunters follow the dogs into whatever terrain the cat chooses, which can mean steep climbs, deep snow, and long days in winter conditions. Steel Creek has spent years developing its lion dogs and reports taking several exceptional cats from the area.

A mountain lion hunt can spend hours waiting for one thing:
A fresh track.
Once snow covers the Southwest Montana mountains, Steel Creek’s guides use trucks and snowmobiles to cover country looking for evidence that a lion has passed through recently enough for the dogs to work.
When the right track is found, the dogs take over.
A lion doesn’t choose where to run or tree based on how easy it will be for the hunter to follow. Once the hounds strike, hunters may find themselves climbing steep timbered ridges, working through deep snow, and following the chase into country that would otherwise be nearly impossible to hunt effectively.
Steel Creek considers this one of its most physically demanding hunts and places heavy emphasis on maintaining a quality pack of lion dogs.
There are no guarantees that a track turns into a treed cat. That uncertainty is part of the experience.
But when a fresh track becomes a race through the mountains and the dogs finally locate the cat, few Western hunts offer anything quite like it.
