Spring bear hunting with Steel Creek can begin two completely different ways.
On a spot-and-stalk hunt, guides work productive feeding areas and glass mountain slopes for bears emerging from the timber. Once the right animal is found, the challenge becomes closing the distance through rugged Montana country.
Or you can hunt behind the dogs.
Hound hunts begin early, with experienced dogs riding on the strike rack while guides use trucks and ATVs to search roads and trails for a fresh bear track. Once the right track is cut, the dogs are released.
Then the hunt changes completely.
GPS collars help track the race, but when a bear heads into steep timber, hunters still have to follow. A treed bear may be several ridges away or tucked into terrain that requires a serious hike to reach.
Steel Creek reports that roughly 30% of the bears in its area are color phase, giving hunters opportunities at cinnamon, brown, and other color variations in addition to traditional black bears. Mature bears commonly run around 5½ feet, with the potential for bears exceeding six feet.
