Steel Creek Outfitters is a family-run Montana operation owned by Michael and Andrea Richie. Michael is a third-generation guide and outfitter who grew up hunting and working in the mountains of Montana and Idaho, began guiding professionally in 2007, and comes from a family outfitting tradition that reaches back to the 1940s. Steel Creek Outfitters itself was established in 2017.
Based in Darby, Montana, the operation focuses on the mountains of Southwest Montana and the Big Hole country. Their hunts range from horseback elk camps reached by a nine-mile pack-in to spring black bear hunts, winter mountain lion hunts behind hounds, and dedicated wolf hunts. Steel Creek is licensed through Montana as outfitter #33139, and the company describes itself as licensed, bonded, and insured.
The common thread is a traditional Western style of outfitting. Horses and mules get hunters into country away from the roads, wall tents and wood stoves serve as base camp, and much of the actual hunting is done on foot. For Michael Richie, that approach is part of a family tradition that predates Steel Creek itself by generations.
