“Fly-in, fly-out backcountry hunts in Idaho's Unit 17, deep inside the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness.”
Dillon and Taylor Weidow run Moose Creek Outfitters out of Hamilton, Montana, and hunt the Idaho side of the Bitterroot divide: Unit 17, in the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness on the Nez Perce National Forest.
There is no road in. You fly a bush plane into their Main Moose Creek Camp, about 35 minutes from Missoula, then ride two to seven hours on horseback to whichever backcountry camp your hunt is out of, with everything you brought packed on the back of a mule.
Dillon has guided and packed in the Selway since 2015 and runs the hounds. Taylor has cooked in the Selway since 2017. Outfitting is their only job.
It is a four-season operation: spring black bear over bait, hounds, or spot and stalk from April through June; elk and deer in the rut from September into November, with rifle hunting in the elk rut that very few permits allow; mountain lion and wolf behind hounds from December through March; and custom horseback pack trips to high mountain lakes in July and August.
They are explicit that they cannot guarantee a successful hunt.
