Lazy J Sporting Club is the sporting arm of Jorgensen Land & Cattle, a fourth-generation family operation covering more than 26,000 acres of farm, pasture and hunting ground around Ideal, in the heart of South Dakota's Golden Triangle.

They have been hosting sportsmen since 1983, and about 20,000 of those acres are huntable, enough that a party does not walk the same cover twice in a week. The habitat is a by-product of how the family farms: they have built the operation around soil health, and the bird numbers follow from it.

The hunt runs out of the Lazy J Grand Lodge, a 22-room lodge with en-suite rooms, two lounges, two wet bars, a full-service kitchen and dining room, a pro shop, a cigar room and an indoor kennel. Chef Adam runs the kitchen. The club is Orvis-endorsed for wingshooting, which is a standards audit as much as a badge.

Beyond the hunting they run a ten-station sporting clays course and behind-the-scenes tours of the cattle and farming operation, both bookable while you are staying. Out of season the property works as an event venue for prairie weddings, corporate retreats and family gatherings, and an 18-hole golf course is in planning.
