Fall Silver Salmon & Trophy Trout, Kenai & Kasilof Rivers

Their own favourite time of year. From August 10 the first silvers reach the middle Kenai, and the rainbows have spent all summer eating salmon eggs and flesh. By late September the second silver run is at its peak, the crowds of July have gone, and the cottonwoods and birches have turned.

The peak of the first run is about August 21 and the second about September 21. The Kasilof is a drift-boat-only river fed by Tustumena Lake, eighteen miles of it fished daily all summer, and it carries a steelhead run that gets almost no attention. Resident rainbows and Dolly Varden are released; silvers are kept inside state limits. From about August 1 the bear fly-outs move to Crescent Lake, where the lake trout, rainbow and Dolly Varden fishing is good alongside the bears. Halibut is available for anyone who wants a day in the salt.

Days two through six sit on the same ladder. Unlike the other three packages this one has a single seasonal rate card. Meals are included if you stay at the Kenai Riverside Resort and not if you stay at the Cabins or the Suites, which have kitchens. Every price above is the Kenai Riverside Suites four-person column, the cheapest of eight lodging columns; the all-inclusive Resort tier runs about 9% higher.

Anglers over 16 buy their own Alaska sport fishing licence online, plus a king salmon stamp on king days. Filleting on the boat is included; vacuum-sealing, boxing and freezing is billed per pound at departure, and they recommend flying fish home as checked baggage in 50 lb cold-storage boxes rather than shipping. River boats take a maximum of 4 anglers, saltwater boats 6.
